A 1964 Aston Martin DB5 with less than 37,000 miles on the clock, which had been in single-family ownership since 1972, smashed its £450,000 – 525,000 estimate at Anglia Car Auctions’ 26 January sale, selling for £556,500.
All 18 vehicles offered from a private Danish collection in various states of repair found new homes. Notable results included a 1964 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 – supplied new by Garage Francorchamps to its first owner in Los Angeles – at £146,280 (estimate £60,000 – 100,000) and a Chevrolet V8-engined 1959 Maserati 3500 GT at £54,060 (estimate £45,000 – 70,000); while a 1967 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 Roadster requiring complete restoration fetched £53,000 (estimate £15,000 – 20,000) and a partially dismantled 1977 Aston Martin V8 made £37,100 (estimate £30,000 – 40,000).
The sale also featured 3 two-owner cars entered on behalf of a finance company, headed by a 91,000-mile 2007 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano without any documents which took £61,480 (estimate £40,000 – 60,000); a 97,000-mile 2011 McLaren MP4-12C with no service history after 2015 went for £59,360 (estimate £30,000 – 50,000); and a 59,000-mile 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo which is believed to have been off the road for some six years brought a mid-estimate £51,940.
A 1987 Ferrari 412 which had covered just 17,298 miles from new narrowly missed its lower estimate, selling for £43,460. The right-hand drive example was supplied by Maranello Concessionaires to its first owner, H.R.H. The Sultan of Selangor, remaining in Malaysia until being imported back into the UK in 2017.
Silverstone Auctions’ debut at Autosport International on 12 January saw its ex-Jim Clark 1966 Ford Lotus Cortina change hands for £168,750 (estimated £180,000 – 200,000).
A 1970 Ferrari 365 GT 2+2 which had benefitted from a recent £20,000 mechanical overhaul claimed the top honours on the day, drawing £200,250 (estimate £190,000 – 220,000), just pipping a 6,700-mile 2005 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren at £196,875 (estimate £160,000 – 180,000).
Other notable highlights included an ‘as-new’ condition 175-mile 1985 MG Metro 6R4 selling for £168,750 (estimate £180,000 – 200,000), and a one-of-21 right-hand drive 1990 AC Cobra MkIV 'Lightweight' which blitzed its £90,000 – 110,000 pre-sale estimate, taking £139,500.
